The largest European woodpecker, the size of a crow and totally black except for a red patch on the top of the male’s head, which on the female is limited to a red patch on the neck. Ivory coloured bill.
Undulating flight always near forest and a powerful, distinctive call that helps location. Drumming and pecking for larvae in old tree trunks can be heard over long distances. Inhabits all types of well-preserved woodland in the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees.
