Signature birds / The Pyrenees
Carrion-feeding bird of prey that basically eats only bones. Very big with long wings and a rhomboid tail. Adults have black wings and tails, while the head and body varies in colour from white to orangey-yellow.
Young birds are completely dark and take seven years to reach adult plumage. Catalogued as “In danger of extinction” in Europe, the only wild population is to be found in the Pyrenees. In Aragón there are 60 breeding pairs.
