Ptarmigan

Signature birds / The Pyrenees

More commonly known as the snow-grouse or white grouse, it is the only example of arctic fauna to be found in Spain. Well adapted to extreme conditions above 2500m, it is to be found on peaks and slopes with little grassy vegetation.

It has two types of plumage. In summer the back, neck and chest are grey, whilst in winter it is completely white. Considered “Vulnerable” in Aragón, there are about 200 breeding pairs.
